Italy's Furlani wins maiden men's long jump world title

TOKYO, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Italy's Mattia Furlani clinched the men's long jump title at the World Athletics Championships here on Wednesday, leaping a personal best of 8.39 meters.

The 20-year-old achieved the winning mark on his fifth attempt to edge Jamaica's Tajay Gayle, the 2019 world champion, who took silver with 8.34 meters, equaling his season's best.

"This is a most special evening," said Furlani. "It is beautiful to be part of this Italian team. We have such a legacy from Italy. We are growing together and all learn so much from Gianmarco Tamberi and Marcell Jacobs."

China's Shi Yuhao produced a season's best of 8.33 meters for the bronze medal, with compatriot Zhang Mingkun finishing sixth.
